mbition against Kwong Tung, and therefore the line was made to lead direct to Kowloon, in order to centralize the
communications of the Province there in the interests of the commerce of Hong Kong. The Railway has great relation with Kwong Tung and South China, and the English Financing Committee has been very anxious to get the Canton-Hankow Railway joined up with the Canton-Kowloon Railway. Our government has also agreed with this, but subject to one condition, that is, after the opening of Whampoa as a Commercial Port. Until the opening of Whampoa, Kowloon remains the centre of communication in South China, and will become the key of South China, if the two railways are linked up. Therefore we must wait until Whampoa has been turned into a commercial port, when South China has no need to depend on Hong Kong direct for communications, but can
Bond make Whampoa her centre for railway traffic to Hu-nan, Au- peh and the Yang Tez. Thus the centre of communication will| not be in Kowloon, but in Whampoa. The Railway is the great asset which will help us in our National Revolution. With it in our hands our Government can cope with British Imperialism; without it, we shall lose our independence of traffic, and Kwong Tung will be subject to English oppression for ever. Now the Government has taken over the administration of the Canton-Kowloon Railway in order directly to promote the welfare of Kwong Tung and indirectly to secure the independence of traffic for the whole Republic. The Railway is of paramount importance, and I hope that all of you my colleagues, all members of the Kuomintang and all people will help Mr. Lai in its management.
